Rerrkirrwanga is a versatile Djapu clan artist who produces both outstanding
classic bark paintings and more modern silk screen prints. This is the only
instrument known to us on the market that was also built by Rerrkirrwanga
herself, and a fine example it is too. A yidaki with a classic shape, only
slightly and simply worked with a draw-knife. In places only the bark has been
removed, so that the beautiful sinuous grain of the wood is clearly visible.
Very little work was necessary on the bore too: just the last few centimetres of
the bell have been cleaned up a little. The weight is perfect for a yidaki and
it sits very nicely in the hand when playing. The sound is powerful and bright,
with marked overtones, but doesn't sound at all "tubey" thanks to the typical
yidaki structure and depth. Painted with ochre, naturally, lending the final
touch to an unqualified success. Movie |
